After moving to Florida, I encountered people every day in my Brazilian, Hispanic & American communities reaching out to me for assistance: I help them fill up forms and applications that it is the first step to help protect them from abusers. The next step is to take them to the Court Administration to file documents. There are many pieces of advice that I am able to provide them per example:
- Acquire security cameras outside and inside the house. 2) Call 911 for help in case of an emergency. 3) I help women to find shelters, a place to stayed until they find a job.
4) Place a PO Box as their contact information instead of showing the place where they live, for safety reasons. As foreigners, these women are not familiar with the legal system works in the USA (many moved here three months ago), some after they were abused in other cities. I provide guidance to help start a new life. Among the type of jobs that I find for them are caregivers, housekeepers, this way they have a home to stay in and a car.
My personal story: I moved from to Sarasota from Detroit and many Brazilians women reach out to me to help them with many issues. I have been a magnet to these women. It has been 35 years of dedication to help these women and the underserved since I moved to the USA.
I want to give you my testimony as I have been through challenging times myself. Here in Florida, I stayed in a shelter for one week due to an ex-boyfriend abusing me. This kind of abuse can happen to anyone, even happened to me. I received counseling and the social workers helped me to become strong.
